Tips on Having the Right Burglar Alarm Response
An effective burgle alarm is installed in the house and then an intruder tries to break-in one night and sets off the alarm. What should be the proper and safe burglar alarm response? Here are tips to remember.
First, whatever happens, stay calm when the burglar alarm sounds or is activated. The advantage with an inaudible alarm (like a blinking light alarm or a vibrating alarm worn as a pendant or around the wrist) is that the owner becomes aware of the intruder while the intruder is unaware that the intrusion has been discovered. The owner is better prepared to meet the danger and have a proper and safe burglar alarm response.
Second, make sure everyone in the house is safe and secured. A safe way of communicating the immediate danger to the rest of the family is through cell phones. Instruct the family members to stay inside their rooms and lock the doors. If the alarm used is audible, like a siren or a buzzer, the more residents should stay indoors—this is the safest burglar alarm response. Never intentionally confront intruders. Audible alarms can either shoo off intruders or make them violently desperate.
The third proper burglar alarm response is to call the police if the alarm system is not hooked up with a police station. Use a cell phone. Landlines can easily be disconnected manually from the outside. If the alarm system is hooked up with the police, just calmly wait for them to arrive. Stay locked inside the bedroom or in a walk-in closet.
Fourth, remain locked in the bedroom even if the police arrives. This burglar alarm response will keep residents safe from shoot-outs or from being confused as the intruder. The only safe time to go out is when the police says so (and make certain it’s the police saying so, not the intruder). Even if the resident owns a gun, it is never advisable to go out unless the intruder is securely apprehended or gone a safe distance away.
In case other members of the family are exposed to immediate danger after the burglar alarm is set off, call the police and wait. Emergencies like this are best handled by the experts, not plain residents. Thus, in most cases, the proper burglar alarm response of residents is to keep calm and stay indoors.
Intruders are more at a disadvantage and at a loss in situations like this. And often, their reaction is to get out of the mess as soon as possible. So don’t stand in their way.
