Helping your kid with his school project is one great way of spending quality time with him. Science projects that quench the thirst for knowledge of inquisitive minds are particularly fulfilling because these provide an interesting backdrop to an activity that strengthens the bond between father and son. But are you really ready to take up the challenge when the moment of truth comes and your son ambles up to you and says: “Dad, can you teach me how to make a burglar alarm?”

If you do not want to disappoint him, perhaps you might want to read right on and learn how to make a burglar alarm yourself before the day of reckoning comes when your son asks that critical question. Learning first is essential to answering your son’s endless queries that begin with the phrase: “Dad, can you teach me how to make…” A burglar alarm looks dauntingly complicated to the uninformed, but it is actually a rather simple device that is made up of just three main components: a buzzer, a switch and a power source.

The following procedures will show you how to make a burglar alarm. You will need the following materials: a rectangular piece of plywood with a dimension of 12 inches by 24 inches; a small DC operated buzzer; 3 pieces of 12 inch long insulated wires; one piece of D size 1.5 volt battery; a piece of clothes line clip; a 4 inch square piece of strong card board; duct tape; fast drying epoxy glue; and, a length of string. To construct your burglar alarm, do the following: Glue the buzzer and the battery alongside each other on the plywood about 6 inches apart; About 8 inches below the buzzer and the battery, position the clip by having one side of its handle glued on the plywood; set these to dry for one hour; Strip off about one inch of insulation from both ends of each of the three wires; Coil one end of the first wire on the jaw of the clip and coil the end of second wire on the opposite jaw of the clip; Punch a hole on the cardboard, insert and tie one end of the string, then place the cardboard between the jaws of the clip so that the wires on both jaws do not come into contact with each other; Take the other end of the first wire that is attached to clip and tape it on the positive terminal of the battery; Tape one end of the third wire on the negative battery terminal and fasten the other end on one of the terminals on the buzzer; Then, finally, take the other end of the second wire that is attached to the clip and fasten on the other terminal on the buzzer.

Voila! You now know how to make a burglar alarm, and all you have to do is pull on the string to turn on the switch and activate the alarm.

Understanding the basic working concept of a burglar alarm will help you choose the best type of home security system to protect your property and your family. And the best part of it is that when your son ambles up to you and says: “Dad, can you teach me how to make a burglar alarm?” You can proudly tell him: “Sure, son, let’s go work on it right now!”
