An Overview of Burglar Alarm Circuits

You don’t need to know the inner workings of a burglar alarm to use it, but if a potential problem arises, or you want to design your own, getting to know the burglar alarm circuit will be important.

The best way to understand how a burglar alarm circuit works is to compare it with appliances: to turn them on or off, you press a switch or button. The burglar alarm works in the same manner, only in this case the sensor is turned on when the event (a break in, smoke or fire breaks out, etc) takes place.

The actual process of how this works in a burglar alarm circuit is through the flow of electricity, which occurs when the circuit is opened or closed. When this happens, a channel opens and the flow starts moving between the opposing charges.

There are basically two types of burglar alarm circuits in the market today: the closed circuit and open circuit. In the former, electricity flows as long as the entryway (i.e., window or door) is closed. When the entryway is breached, the circuit is cut and the alarm will sound.

An open burglar alarm circuit turns on the electricity once the entryway or door is no longer shut. Most systems use the closed circuit one as it is harder to dismantle.

Setting up the burglar alarm circuit can be done in numerous ways. One is to simply install an electromagnetic switch in the entry/exit point, which is connected to the security system. An even simpler method is to add a button in between the door and door jamb. What this means is that the moment the door is opened, the alarm will go off.

A more complex but effective burglar alarm circuit involves using a control box that holds all the wires and circuits for all exit/entry points. What makes this system effective is that until you set the right combination on the keypad, the alarm bells will not cease. To increase its efficiency, make certain that the control box is kept in a discreet area.

Knowledge of burglar alarm circuits are not just for the technophiles; with a greater understanding of how the system works, you will, in some cases, be able to fix small problems that may come up, or at least provide essential information to help solve the problem right away.

You can never know too much when it comes to security systems. As you study the burglar alarm circuits, the more prepared you will be for any eventuality.
