In the minds of most people a security alarm is a device that emits a sound when an intruder breaks in. The fact however, is that indoor burglar alarm sensors today come in a variety of forms, and understanding how they work is crucial to selecting the right one for you.

When it comes to indoor burglar alarm sensors, the most common is the passive infra red detector (PIR). It has become a standard feature in nearly all security systems because it is affordable and works in a very effective manner: after being installed, it memorizes the temperature of the room or zone it has been installed in. Because humans emit infra red radiation, it will be able to detect its presence by the alteration in temperature. Most of the infra red devices can be adjusted for sensitivity and can now cover wider areas.

Other popular forms of burglar alarm sensors are the ultrasonic detectors. This device functions in accordance with the principles of the Doppler Effect: basically what this means is that the sound waves in the room will be changed by the presence of a moving object (like an intruder). These types of burglar alarm sensors work by transmitting sound waves around the room where it is based, so any alteration will be sensed quickly.

Microwave detectors are burglar alarm sensors that work in a fashion similar to ultrasonic detectors, except that they act as a transmitter and are also able to receive the microwaves that emanate from the surrounding area.

As with the ultrasonic detectors, microwave alarms will trigger off when there is a sudden change in the motion of the sound waves in the area. This can be waves moving away, or coming near the device. It can also be triggered by any other shift or disturbance in the frequency in which it is operating.

Photo beams are popular burglar alarm sensors, especially in museums and other similar edifices. These systems are implemented in the form of visible red beams crisscrossing the area that they are to protect. Although most people think of them as always being visible, some of them are not, making it harder to detect.
