Security Systems: How a Burglar Alarm Works
A burglar alarm is a type of security system that alerts people of an intrusion into a house or building. It is one of the most basic of all security systems. We will look at how a burglar alarm works in this article.
- What Does a Burglar Alarm Do?
A burglar alarm’s job is to alert people of an intrusion in a house, building or other territory. The burglar alarm may do this by emitting a loud sound, dialing the police and sending a preset message (e.g. “This is so-so at this address, there’s a robber”), flashing lights or a combination thereof.
- What are the Types of Burglar Alarms?
One distinguishes between two basic types of burglar alarms based on their functions:
The first type is for the perimeter area or entrance building and is designed to keep intruders from entering. For this purpose, a circuit alarm is often used.
The second type of burglar alarm is used to detect intruders that are already in the building. For this, a motion detector is more suitable.
- What Triggers a Burglar Alarm?
A burglar alarm is programmed to recognize certain actions as acts of intrusion. When these actions are detected, the alarm is triggered. For example, circuit alarms are usually designed to set off an alarm when a door is opened, a window glass is broken and so on. Just about any type of break-in can be used as a trigger, such as when a would-be intruder steps on a door mat. In all cases, an electric circuit in the device is either “opened” or “closed”, thus triggering the alarm.
A motion detector for indoor use is triggered by changing light values or patterns. The security system records the normal amount or pattern of light in a room. When someone enters the room and the light changes, the burglar alarm assumes that an intruder has entered the area and sets off the alarm. The alarm may also be triggered when light sensors are blocked by the intruder’s body.
- How is a Burglar Alarm Turned Off?
With most modern security systems, the burglar alarm can’t be stopped except with a remote control box with a keypad on it. This must be a good distance from the burglar alarm itself so that the trespasser won’t have a chance to turn it off or disable it.
- What Happens When a Burglar Alarm is Triggered?
The security system can do any number of things: It may flash lights outside the building to alert neighbors and the police. It may dial the police or the security company that installed it with a prerecorded message. Or it may play sirens to wake up the whole neighborhood. These alarms will play indefinitely until the remote control box is used to turn it off. It is useful to keep it running to help police locate the house or building that has been broken into.
- How Many Burglar Alarms Can a Building Have?
It depends on the security system you install. There can be just one or several that cover an entire house or building, with one central control box controlling them. But no matter how simple or advanced a burglar system is, it is always built on the same principles and basic design. You should look for a reliable security company with a verifiable track record to make sure you get only the best and most effective alarm systems for your home.
